ALEKS Math Placement

Why take a math placement assessment?

All undergraduate students are required to complete a quantitative reasoning course [QUAN] to earn a bachelor’s degree. For many majors, this requirement is satisfied by completing a specific math class. To ensure you take the math class that is the best fit for your skill level and major, you are required to complete the ALEKS math placement assessment before registering for your first math class.

Not everyone needs to complete the ALEKS math placement assessment. If one of the following conditions applies, you should not take the placement assessment unless directed by your academic advisor:

  • You have earned a grade of C or higher in a college-level math course(s) from a college or university (this includes Running Start/Dual Enrollment credit)
  • You earned a score of 2 or higher on the Calculus AB exam
  • You earned a score of 3 or higher on the Calculus BC exam
  • You earned a score of 4 or above on the International Baccalaureate higher level exam (HL) for mathematics

If you do not meet any of the conditions above AND are planning to pursue one of the following majors, you should plan to complete the math placement assessment prior to meeting with your academic advisor. Majors requiring math coursework include:
