Graduation vs. Commencement—what’s the difference?

Graduation is a multi-step process consisting of submitting an application for degree, paying your graduation fee and completing all academic requirements for your degree.

Commencement refers to the ceremony on May 7.

Apply to graduate

You must apply to graduate. You do this through myWSU and there is a $60 charge.

If you are a May graduate, you need to apply to graduate by March 4 to receive information about Commencement and be included in the Commencement program. After that date, the charge to apply to graduate goes up.

If you are a July graduate, you still need to apply to graduate by March 4 to receive information about Commencement and be included in the Commencement program. If you are not participating in Commencement, summer graduates have until May 27 to apply before the fee goes up.

Eligibility to participate in Commencement

You are eligible to participate in commencement if:

  • You completed degree requirements in December 2021
  • You applied to graduate in May or July 2022
  • Doctoral (except Doctor of Nurse Practitioner) candidates must have permission from the WSU Pullman Graduate School to participate

Your name will be in the program, and you will receive information from us if:

  • You graduated in December 2021
  • You are graduating in May 2022 and you apply to graduate by March 4
  • You are graduating in July 2022 and you apply to graduate by March 4

No tickets are needed to attend Commencement.
